Background
Nowadays, with science and technology advancing and the pace of life accelerating, Chinese people’s reading habits have become more exposed to Internet and fragmented, the per capita reading volume of Chinese people has decreased significantly, and the physical bookstores and libraries have been hit hard. In addition, the rise of large e-business and e-books poses challenges for many physical bookstores. The emergence of COVID-19 has brought nearly half of the small and medium-sized bookstores to a desperate situation.
Brief Introduction
In June 2020, the Fun Reading During Pandemic Project initiated by SRP－with joined hands of NPI Charity, Alibaba Three-Hour Voluntary Service Platform, the Youth Association of Renmin University of China Labor and Human Resources College, the Youth Association of Shanghai University, and the Reading Revival Program, 21H, Between the Mythical Beasts, Luming Bookstore, through online book sharing, offline chatting activities, reader research and other methods, called on everyone to review the fun of slow reading and enjoy the tranquility of their souls; help physical bookstores find appropriate methods to transform and overcome difficulties.
Outcome
From June to September 2020, the project team planned and organized 8 online good book sharing activities, 2 offline chatting and reading sharing sessions, and 1 reading questionnaire survey, which received nearly 10,000 times of attention, 465 participations and 202 questionnaires. “Meaningful”, “harvest and happiness”, “different experience”, and “soul encounter” are frequent words in activity evaluation.
